An Improvement to Divisive Analysis in Hierarchical Clustering

Abstract :
The presentation will  present an improvement to the performance of the
Hierarchical Clustering technique known as Divisive Analysis (DIANA). At
present, DIANA is well known and is commonly applied in Hierarchical
Clustering. The main objective of the research described in this thesis is
to further improve DIANA in order to enhance the Hierarchical Clustering
performance. The study detects the short coming of DIANA where some
samples along the boundary may not be identified into the most appropriate
cluster. The performance of the technique developed in this work is
compared with that of DIANA. This is done by means of using four measures
of cluster quality, Inter-Intra Distance, McClain Rao, Lack of
homogeneity, and Divisive coefficient. 19 datasets from public domain and
one student dataset are used in this work. The comparison confirms that
the technique developed yields superior results to DIANA. This work is yet
another step to improve and develop Hierarchical Clustering technique to
clustering community.
